White Elephant Back Terrace is located in the Mammoth Hot Springs section of Yellowstone National Park along the Upper Terrace Drive just past the spectacular Orange Spring Mound. At one time, White Elephant Back Terrace may have been quite an amazing sight. It looks similar in structure to the Orange Spring Mound, except potentially much larger. Unlike Orange Spring Mound, the bright colors that accompany a steady flow of hot spring water are not present at White Elephant Back Terrace.
This terrace is dried out, cracking and crumbling but must have been an active spring for quite a long time to create a formation of this size (it is really big!) It is named the White Elephant Back Terrace because when it was discovered it was tough to look like the vertebral column of an elephant. If you drive the Upper Terrace Drive instead of walking it there is a pretty good chance you will cruise right by this formation.
