The Orange Spring Mound in the Mammoth Hot Springs section of Yellowstone is one of the most impressive sights you will see when you visit this section of Yellowstone.  The Orange Spring Mound is about 48 by 20 feet and the spring has a water temperature of about 157 degrees.  The mound is located at the very top of the Upper Terrace Drive, a one-way road at the top of the Mammoth Hot Springs area.  If you are coming from the south (Norris area) then the Upper Terrace Drive will be a left-hand turn off of the Grand Loop road.

There is limited parking along the road and while not many people do, it can be easier and more enjoyable to walk the road (there is no sidewalk) than to deal with the traffic and limited parking along the way.  If you walk the Upper Terrace Drive, you’ll be able to get more photos of the terraces along the way, avoid any irate drivers and go through the loop at your own pace.  You’ll pass a few other terraces on the way up to the Orange Spring Mound.

Once you get to Orange Spring Mound there is a boardwalk around the formation with informational signs to provide a little more information about the formation in front of you.  Like other sections of of the terrace in the Mammoth Hot Springs area even Orange Spring Mound is starting to dry out and crumble in some places (so hurry up and get there before it gets all dried out) but there is still some hot spring water coming out of a section of the terrace.

If you start out your tour of the Mammoth Hot Springs area of Yellowstone with a trip to Orange Spring Mound then you will see a few other terraces along the Upper Terrace Drive.  To see more cool sights be sure to hike the lower terrace area which IS a hiking trail and not a road.  Much of the lower trail is a boardwalk.  It is fairly easy walking, however there are some steeper sections with lots of steps in the lower area.
