Outside Yellowstone Historic Center Museum you will find a number of stagecoaches and an historic train car outside the building.  Inside are the exhibits mentioned above along with some changing exhibits like a collection of historical fly fishing rods, reels, flies and a fly tying machine.  The transportation displays include the evolution of air travel to Yellowstone, the evolution of rail travel to Yellowstone and how these faster, easier modes of transportation altered the park and forced it’s policies and practices to change over the years.

The movies and videos show in the three theater areas of the Yellowstone Historic Center Museum cover topics including the fires of 1988 and the 1959 Hebgen Lake earthquake and its effects on Yellowstone.  Movies may change from time to time so check with the museum to see what might be playing when you plan your visit.  The films run continuously so chances are you’ll need to either ask at the cashiers desk to find out the actual start times or pop your head into the theater areas to get an idea of when to go in to see each one from the start.

Some of the exhibits are on loan from various people connected with the history of Yellowstone and are likely to change throughout the year.  Currently you’ll be able to see the actual skis used on the first  plane to land in the snow at the  Yellowstone airport during the early days of air travel to the park.  There is a display of the famous Harriman Blue China used at the Union Pacific Lodge in West Yellowstone and a collection of souvenirs available and collected by people over the years on their visits to Yellowstone National Park.

You’ll be able to see (a photo of) the inside of a plane used to fly to Yellowstone and why the maximum height for the flight attendants was 5 feet 3 inches.  Some of the uniforms worn by various employees are on display in the museum.  There are items provided for plane passengers to Yellowstone on display as well as many horse drawn freight wagons which was how lots of supplies initially reached Yellowstone National Park.
