The Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center in West Yellowstone is one place where you are guaranteed to see wildlife around Yellowstone National Park! When driving through Yellowstone you will definitely see bison along the road and probably right in front of your car on the road. Elk are a common sight but bears and wolves tend to be a bit more elusive. At the Grizzly and World Discovery Center right outside the park entrance in West Yellowstone you are guaranteed to see both live Grizzly Bears and a bunch of wolves.
Admission to the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery center is $10.50 per person and is good for two consecutive days. When you walk in you will see numerous indoor exhibits dedicated to both grizzly and black bears. The information presented covers their habitats, threats, lifestyles and reproductive patterns, history in the National Park as well as actions taken to help preserve the bears and their habitats. There are many real stuffed bears throughout the exhibit, both grizzly and black bears.
Within the center there is a movie theater that shows a variety of films about Yellowstone, grizzly bears and related topics. The selection of films changes throughout the day so you could sit in the theater all day and watch a ton of different movies on related to wildlife and bears in particular. The live animals are out in a sanctuary in the back of the exhibits and offer great views of the bears and wolves in something fairly close to a natural habitat.
As of September 2010 there are three different areas in the back and more under construction. To the left when you walk out the door is a bear area where two grizzly bears at a time are able to run, play, feed and sometimes put on a show for those watching. There is a viewing platform for the grizzly bears and a few coin operated binocular type things that cost a quarter and allow visitors without their own binoculars to get a closer view of the grizzly bears.
On the right side when you walk out are the wolf habitats. As of September 2010 there were two separate wolf habitats each with 4 wolves. Inside both the grizzly and wolf habitats there are pools, trees and a lot of room to run around and get some exercise. Both the grizzly bears and the wolves tent to be fairly active and the way the habitats are setup chances are you will be able to get rather good pictures of the grizzly bears and the wolves.
