The North Crater Flow Trail at Craters Of the Moon National Monument is the first trail you will come to after passing the visitor center, the toll both and starting out on the 7-mile Craters of the Moon Loop road.  The North Crater Flow Trail is a short (.25 mile) easy, paved trail that provides a self guided tour of some of the areas within Craters of the Moon.  Along the trail there are a number of signs that provide information about the area and the lava flow formations you will see in front of you.

Along the trail you will (if you stop to read the signs) learn about things like Pahoehoe Lava which is the most common type of lave flow at Craters of the Moon and the Triple Twist Tree that is 1,350 years old and indicates that the last lava flow through the area was at least 1,350 years ago (since a volcanic lava flow kills all plant life in its path).  Other signs along the trail discuss aa lava flows, Blue Dragon Lava, Rafted Blocks and Block Lava.

Each of the different types of lava flows result in different surface views of the lava formations along the North Crater Flow trail.  When you visit Craters of The Moon National, this is a great, short, easy educational trail you should definitely hike!  Since the whole trail is paved, it is an easy hike and generally wheel chair accessible so anyone can traverse it and see the sights.

If you should happen to be camping at the Lava Flow campground at Craters of the Moon you can walk right over to the North Crater Flow trail from the campground.  You can either walk back out to the Craters of the Moon Loop Road from the campground or hike directly to the trail from the campground via a little connecting trail near one of the bathhouses in the Lava Flow campground.

Other great trails at Craters of the Moon include the North Crater Trail (a much longer and more strenuous hike), Devils Orchard Nature trail and the Caves Trail along which you will find the Indian Cave Tunnel, Beauty Cave, Boy Scout Cave and Dewdrop Cave.  In addition to these trails there are a number of other hiking trails that go to and through other lava flow formations and awesome sights in Craters of the Moon!
